The Anatomy Department of Thanjavur Medical College has a rich legacy of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation since its inception. Knowledge of Anatomy forms a strong foundation for whole of medicine.

The faculties of Anatomy Department are imparting detailed and complete knowledge of Human Anatomy from microscopic to macroscopic stratum which includes Gross Anatomy, Osteology, Histology, Embryology, Cross Sectional Anatomy, Genetics, Surface Anatomy, Radiological Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The teaching methodologies followed for undergraduate students are Dissection, Demonstration, Case-based learning, small group discussion, early clinical exposure, self-directed learning, symposia, and integrated sessions. The Anatomy department provides high quality education, training and research opportunities in Human Anatomy, empowering students to become competent healthcare professionals.

The Department of Anatomy is equipped with a spacious dissection hall with an embalming room, well equipped Histology laboratory, Museum with a vast collection of anatomical specimens and models, Research laboratory, Demonstration rooms and Library. The department encourages research activities among the faculties and students, focusing on various aspects of human Anatomy including morphometry, neuroanatomy, and embryology. Faculty members have published numerous research articles in indexed national and international journals. Faculties and postgraduates have presented numerous research projects as Posters and papers in various National Conferences.

CMEs are being conducted by the department from time to time. Intercollege quiz competition- Vesaliquiz for undergraduate students has been conducted by the department. Art competition, poster presentation, Essay writing, poetry competition, Photography, and Model making competitions have been conducted by the department for undergraduate students on the eve of World Anatomy Day.

Embalming process of cadavers is done in this department in accordance with the Anatomy act. The embalmed bodies are utilized for study purposes and research activities of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Registration for voluntary body donation after death is encouraged among the public by the Anatomy department.

MD Anatomy postgraduates are given an advanced training in human Anatomy by means of lectures, Dissection and Small group discussions. Seminars and journal club presentations are organized for postgraduates routinely. Mentored research projects are allotted to the postgraduates. Histotechnique procedures are taught to the postgraduates.

In addition to MBBS students and MD/MS/DM/Mch postgraduates, the department teaches Anatomy to Paramedical students pursuing BSc Allied Health Sciences, Diploma in Pharmacy, Diploma in Optometry, Diploma in Radiation Technology and Diploma in Radio- Diagnosis Technology.

Horizontal and Vertical integration classes are organized periodically for MBBS students. Third Professional year MBBS Students who opt Anatomy for their elective postings can get trained in any of the following postings- Comprehensive window Dissections of lower limb, Surgical Anatomy of Anterior Abdominal wall, Neuroanatomy& its clinical implications and Cytogenetics- Basics of Karyotyping.

Guest lectures by renowned healthcare professionals is being organized by the department regularly. The Anatomy Department at Thanjavur Medical College is a center of excellence in Anatomy education and research with a commitment to produce skilled and knowledgeable healthcare professionals. With its vast infrastructure, experienced faculty and innovative curriculum, the department continues to inspire and shape the future of medical education.
