A Brief History of how the Thanjavur Medical College was formed
Thanjavur was always known for its contribution to the field of medicine right from the days of Raja Serfoji, who introduced for the first time medical surgery in this region with the help of European missionaries and doctors. The Raja Mirasudhar Hospital was one of the outstanding hospitals founded with the help of the Maratha Royal Family and the philanthropic land lords of Thanjavur District. This hospital had the rarest distinction of having a teaching medical institution during the British days, which produced licensed medical practitioners those days.
The idea of starting a full-fledged Medical College in Thanjavur became a reality when Shri. K. Kamaraj was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Initially it was intended to start this college in the vicinity of the Raja Mirasudhar Hospital (in the place now occupied by public library, State Bank of India etc.,) and the foundation stone was laid by the President of India Rajendra Prasad being garlanded by Shri. A. Y. S. Parisutha Nadar who was then the Chairman Thanjavur Municipality and also the sitting M.L.A. of Thanjavur.
The idea of starting this Medical College in a much larger area was conceived later and the search was on.
The Rotary Club of Thanjavur had earlier acquired about 156 acres of land for the purpose of establishing the Raja Serfoji College. Most part of these lands were gifted to Rotary by Shri. P. A. Yaggappa Nadar, who was the major donor and the rest came in as contribution by Rotarians like Shri. A. Y. S. Parisutha Nadar, Rao Bahadur A. Y. Arulananda Samy Nadar, Mr. K. V. Srinivasan, Mr. T. S. Krishnamurthy and other outstanding Rotarians of that time.
These lands were handed over to the Government along with the buildings of Raja Serfoji College as Rotary was finding it difficult to run the same on its own. Of these lands about 85 acres was bifurcated to start a Medical College as it stands today. These lands fall north of the former railway line running from Vallam to Thanjavur, in Lakshathope Village of Thanjavur Taluk. (Now this rail track area has been converted into a public road.) The land south of the railway line measuring about 69 acres in Neelagiri Vattam, was retained for Serfoji College, which was later bifurcated for the formation of the New Bus Stand.
Shri. K. Kamaraj was mainly instrumental in guiding the formation of the Thanjavur Medical College in this region to provide Medical relief and treatment to this region of Thanjavur. Great efforts were taken by him. Mr. A. Y. S. Parisutha Nadar who was the M.L.A of Thanjavur and Chairman of Thanjavur Municipality had also played a major role for the establishment of the College along with social service organizations and mobilizing public support for the establishments of this great institution for which Thanjavur always stands proud.
