Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the heart and the circulatory system. Cardiologists use various tests and procedures to diagnose and manage heart conditions, including:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): Measures the heart's electrical activity.
  • Echocardiogram: Uses sound waves to create images of the heart.
  • Stress test: Measures the heart's function during physical activity.
  • Cardiac catheterization: Inserts a catheter into the heart to visualize blood flow and pressure.
  • Imaging tests: Such as MRI, CT, and PET scans to visualize the heart and blood vessels.

CARDIOLOGISTS TREAT A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS, INCLUDING

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart failure
  • Arrhythmias
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Pericardial disease
  • Hypertension
  • Peripheral artery disease

CARDIOLOGISTS MAY ALSO PERFORM PROCEDURES SUCH AS:

  • Angiogram to find out block vessels.
  • Angioplasty: Opens blocked coronary arteries.
  • Stenting: Places a stent to keep arteries open.
  • Pacemaker implantation: Regulates the heart's rhythm.
