Department of Neurosurgery is one of the oldest Super Specialty started in Thanjavur Medical College in 1967 as per G.O.No.(MS).985, Health, Dated:31.05.1966). It caters to surrounding 8 districts for management of head Injury / Spine Injury and tertiary level Neurosurgical care.

The patient load in terms of OP / IP / Operated cases is increasing each year, which shows the importance of this centre and people’s faith in the department is ever growing. The Department of Neurosurgery continued to render specialized neurosurgical care even during the Covid pandemic and topped the state in CMCHIS performance done 2020 & 2021.

The department is equipped with High end Operating Microscope, Ultrasonic aspirator and Neuro endoscope. All High end micro neurosurgery including Neuro Oncology, Vascular Neurosurgery, Spinal surgery including minimally invasive procedures, Craniovertebral junction surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neuro Endoscopic surgery are regularly being done in this centre on par with other state and national neurosurgical centers.

The Neurosurgery department in Thanjavur Medical College & Hospital, Thanjavur is equipped with excellent infrastructure and adequate teachers to train 4 MCh Neurosurgery residents every year. We have Operation Theatre on 5 days a week and Emergency Neurosurgery is done 24x7 all 365 days. We also have an excellent 28 bedded Neuro ICU (14 Neurosurgery + 14 Neurology) at PMSSY block and 18 bedded Head-injury ICU in ward 303.
