The Department of Thoracic Medicine holds expert and experienced faculty who graduated from prestigious institutes who constantly update themselves and work to achieve the benchmark in the patient care and academic performance. Department of Respiratory Medicine Started in 1979. Now we have full-fledged department with HOD, 1 Assistant professor, 2 senior resident.
Two post graduate diploma seats started in 2015 which is upgraded to master degree by 2019. This department started paramedical course B.Sc Respiratory Therapy from 2020. Hence we have better patient to health care professional ratio.
This department works round-the-clock, taking care of around 3,800 outpatients and 150 inpatients per month. We provide utmost care for obstructive airway disease patient by evaluating through spirometry and long term patient care by appropriate treatment and pulmonary rehabilitation techniques.
We are doing procedures like Video Bronchoscopy, Medical Thoracoscopy, Ultrasound Guided Thoracentesis, FNAC and Biopsy for early diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as lung malignancy and tuberculosis. We are managing patients by Interventional procedures like Tube thoracostomy, Pigtail catherisation, Pleurodesis and intrapleural fibrinolytics.
Our department is evolving in the field of Sleep medicine by installing Sleep lab and conducting polysomnography for management of patient with sleep disorder. We are highly equipped for providing critical care for patient with respiratory failure by using HFNO, Non Invasive Ventilation and Mechanical Ventilation.
We have specialized ward for Tuberculosis patient (Tamil Nadu Kasanoi Erappila Thittam) to provide better nutritional support, appropriate treatment and counselling for drug compliance. District Nodal DRTB Centre also managed in by our department. Our Department has District nodal DRTB centre which is a referral centre for DRTB cases like INH monoresistant TB, Poly drug resistant MDR TB, Pre XDR TB, XDR TB from nearby districts.
The department uphold various research activities from both Post Graduate students and teaching facilities in publishing research articles and constant participation in state and national conferences. We both conducting and attending CME, Workshops for updating knowledge in the rapidly growing field. Our Department often held awareness programme for common respiratory illness like Asthma, COPD and Tuberculosis for Public education.
