The Govt of Tamil Nadu established full-fledged separate Department of Vascular surgery with M.ch qualified surgeons in the year 2015 with a bed strength of 20. Now it has been increased 60Beds. It is tertiary referral centre for vascular surgery for the people of western coastal districts of Tamil Nadu.

Prof Maruthu Thurai was the first to initiate process of starting Department of Vascular surgery at Thanjavur Medical College. He took painstaking efforts to build the department from scratch. He was ably helped by the professors then. Prof Dr. Sathyabama, Prof Dr. Ashok kumar and Prof Dr. Balakumar were the previous heads of the department.

Prof S. Jeyakumar, the Dean of TMCH was instrumental in stating Endovascular catheterisation lab in the year 2017 - 2019. The department had the stat of art equipment to the department like C-arm and RFA for Endovenous therapy. In Tamil Nadu only Vascular Surgery Department with a dedicated Biplane Cath-Lab which was functioning since 2019 to till date.

From August 2015 to 2021 date the Department of Vascular surgery is training MS Postgraduates .from 2022 onwards MCh Vascular Surgery programme was started with 2seats per year under the guidance of Prof.Dr.K.Elancheralathan .

It has been offering round-the-clock emergency services (Trauma and Non Traumatic Vascular Emergency , along with Elective regular services ranging from Aortic interventions ( Open and Endovascular), Peripheral arterial Revascularisation interventions ( Open and Endovascular ), Haemodialysis Access interventions, Superficial and Deep vein interventions,Renal transplant surgeries ,Vascular Malformation & Lymphedema interventions, Carotid interventions, visceral and peripheral aneurysmal interventions (open and endovascular). People in the surrounding districts are also mainly benefited from the department.

This Department played a vital part and also part of the team in “PAADHAM PAATHUKAPPOM THITTAM” a project for diabetic foot care services. It has been declared the pilot center by the Government of Tamil Nadu, and general surgeons from all over Tamil Nadu participate in training. During the program, every month guest lectures are being delivered by eminent faculties from various parts of Tamil Nadu along with case discussions and live operative workshops.

The Outpatient Services function on Tuesday and Thursday. while the Elective open major surgeries happen on Monday, wednesday and Friday . Elective Endovascular and AV fistula Surgeries were done everyday except Sunday . On average about 6000 patients attend our OPD per year and 1400 elective major surgeries are performed every year. Currently, the department is a 60 -bed unit with an exclusive ICU housing 6 beds and exclusive non vascular lab.

The Department has a Library with an extensive book collection and a Lecture hall with the latest audio-visual aids are inculcating the research ideology in the students and exposure to recent advances in the field of vascular surgery. The department produces numerous research publications every year with our postgraduate students being selected for podium presentations in various conferences. The department conducts various academic activities for the post-graduates regularly and also takes part in organizing Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs and attends national conferences to exchange ideas and knowledge sharing.

Award and achievement by department and faculty

Department of vascular surgery along with plastic and general surgery initiated foot clinic services in TMCH and it has been expanded as PATHAM PATHUGAPPOM THITTAM across the state by government of tamilnadu.
